There may be other brand names for Zomig.

When Zomig Should Not Be Used:
You should not use Zomig if you have had an allergic reaction to zolmitriptan, or if you have a history of heart disease, stroke, ischemic bowel disease, or peripheral vascular disease. You should not use Zomig if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, or hemiplegic or basilar migraine headaches. Do not use Zomig if you have used any other migraine medicine such as sumatriptan (Imitrex®) in the past 24 hours. Do not use Zomig if you have used an ergotamine medicine (such as methysergide, or D.H.E. 45®) within the past 24 hours. You should not use Zomig if you have used an MAO inhibitor (MAOI) such as Eldepryl®, Marplan®, Nardil®, or Parnate® within the past 14 days.

How to Use Zomig:
Tablet, Dissolving Tablet

  • Your doctor will tell you how much of Zomig to use and how often. Do not use more medicine or use it more often than your doctor tells you to.
  • Zomig comes with patient instructions. Read and follow these instructions carefully. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
  • If you are using the disintegrating tablet, make sure your hands are dry before you handle the tablet. Do not open the blister pack that contains the tablet until you are ready to take it. Remove the tablet from the blister pack by peeling back the foil, then taking the tablet out. Do not push the tablet through the foil. Place the tablet on your tongue. After the tablet has melted, swallow or take a drink of water.
  • Zomig relieves migraine headaches, but will not prevent a migraine. You should only use zolmitriptan when you actually have a migraine.
  • Usually, one tablet will decrease or take away your migraine headache. If you have a second headache at least 2 hours after using Zomig, you may use a second tablet. There is a maximum amount of Zomig that is safe to use in one day. If one tablet does not decrease or take away your headache, talk with your doctor before using more medicine.

If a dose of Zomig is missed:

  • Zolmitriptan is only used when you have a migraine. It is not used on a regular schedule.

How to Store and Dispose of Zomig:

  • Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep the medicine in the blister packs. Throw away any unused medicine after it has been taken out of the blister pack.
  • Ask your pharmacist, doctor, or health caregiver about the best way to dispose of any outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed.
  • Keep all medicine away from children and never share your medicine with anyone.

Drugs and Foods to Avoid While Taking Zomig:
Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are using birth control pills, cimetidine (Tagamet®), propranolol (Inderal®), or a medicine for depression (such as fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, paroxetine, sertraline, Luvox®, Paxil®, Prozac®, or Zoloft®).

Warnings While Using Zomig:

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant, if you plan to become pregnant, or if you are breast feeding.
  • If you are at higher risk for heart disease, talk with your doctor before using Zomig. Risk factors for heart disease include smoking, high cholesterol, a family history of heart disease, being overweight, and having diabetes. Men over the age of 40 and postmenopausal women are also at risk of heart disease.
  • You should not use zolmitriptan if your headache symptoms are different from the symptoms you usually have with a migraine headache. If you have a severe headache and do not know the cause, call your doctor.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe liver or kidney disease.
  • Zomig may make you dizzy. Avoid driving, using machines, or doing anything else that could be dangerous if you are not alert.
  • The orally disintegrating tablet contains phenylalanine. Tell your doctor if you have phenylketonuria (PKU) before using this form of zolmitriptan.
