Amlodipine (By mouth)
Amlodipine (am-LOE-di-peen)

Treats high blood pressure and chest pain (angina). Amlodipine (Amlodipine Besylate) is a calcium channel blocker.

When Amlodipine (Amlodipine Besylate) Should Not Be Used:
You should not use Amlodipine (Amlodipine Besylate) if you have had an allergic reaction to amlodipine or to similar medicines (such as verapamil, Adalat®, Calan®, Cardizem®, Lotrel®, Plendil®, or Procardia®).

How to Use Amlodipine (Amlodipine Besylate):
Tablet, Dissolving Tablet

  • Your doctor will tell you how much of Amlodipine (Amlodipine Besylate) to use and how often. Your dose may need to be changed several times in order to find out what works best for you. Do not use more medicine or use it more often than your doctor tells you to.
  • Take Amlodipine (Amlodipine Besylate) at the same time each day.
  • You may take Amlodipine (Amlodipine Besylate) with or without food.
  • Carefully follow your doctor's instructions about any special diet.

If a dose of Amlodipine (Amlodipine Besylate) is missed:

  • If you miss a dose or forget to use your medicine, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then to use the medicine and skip the missed dose. Do not use extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.Do not take Amlodipine (Amlodipine Besylate) if it has been more than 12 hours since you missed your last dose.

How to Store and Dispose of Amlodipine (Amlodipine Besylate):

  • Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.
  • Ask your pharmacist, doctor, or health caregiver about the best way to dispose of any leftover medicine after you have finished your treatment. You will also need to throw away old medicine after the expiration date has passed.
  • Keep all medicine away from children and never share your medicine with anyone.

Drugs and Foods to Avoid While Taking Amlodipine (Amlodipine Besylate):
Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

  • There are many other medicines that can interact with amlodipine. Make sure your doctor knows about ALL other medicines you are using. This includes over-the-counter medicines that can increase your blood pressure (such as diet pills, cold and allergy medicines, or asthma medicines).

Warnings While Using Amlodipine (Amlodipine Besylate):

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have kidney disease, liver disease, severe chest pain, a recent heart attack, heart or blood vessel disease (such as coronary artery disease), low blood pressure, or aortic stenosis (narrowing of a valve in your heart).
  • Amlodipine (Amlodipine Besylate) may make you dizzy or lightheaded. Avoid driving, using machines, or doing anything else that could be dangerous if you are not alert.
  • If you stop using Amlodipine (Amlodipine Besylate), your blood pressure may go up. High blood pressure usually has no symptoms. Even if you feel well, do not stop using the medicine without asking your doctor.
  • Your doctor will need to check your progress at regular visits while you are using Amlodipine (Amlodipine Besylate). Be sure to keep all appointments.Blood tests may be needed to check for unwanted effects.

Possible Side Effects While Using Amlodipine (Amlodipine Besylate):
Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:

  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing.
  • Chest pain (may be related to your disease and not a side effect).
  • Dark-colored urine.
  • Fast, pounding, or uneven heartbeat
  • Lightheadedness, dizziness, or fainting.
  • Swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet.
  • Unusual tiredness or weakness.
  • Warmth or redness in your face, neck, arms, or upper chest.
  • Yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes.

If you notice these less serious side effects while taking Amlodipine (Amlodipine Besylate), talk with your doctor:

  • Headache.
  • Nausea, stomach pain or discomfort.
  • Sleepiness or unusual drowsiness.

If you notice other side effects that you think are caused by Amlodipine (Amlodipine Besylate), tell your doctor.
